Care at a glance

The valentini puffer is white with black saddle-shaped bands and yellow fins, with a wilful, almost dog-like presence. Remarkably, a completely different fish, a particular filefish, mimics its appearance to enjoy the same protection: predators know that puffers are toxic.

In a reef tank it is a risk: it nips corals, clams, shrimp and snails, and sometimes the fins of slow fish. Its teeth grow continuously, so provide hard, shelled food to wear them down, and preferably keep it in a tank without invertebrates.

Good to know

  • Preys on shrimp and snails
  • Nips long fins
