Care at a glance

Despite its name, the scooter blenny is not a blenny but a relative of the mandarin, with the same jerky way of hopping across the bottom. It is mottled brown-grey and therefore barely noticeable until you see it move.

Its food is its weak point: it picks microscopic crustaceans off rock and sand all day and often refuses prepared foods. Only put it in a large, long-established reef tank with a big copepod population, and not with fast fish that snatch the food away.

Good to know

  • Needs a mature, stable tank
  • Hard to wean onto dry food
