Care at a glance

The sparkling gourami from South-East Asia is a dwarf labyrinth fish of just a few centimetres, dotted with pearly spots and fitted with striking blue eyes. Remarkably, it croaks audibly: a mechanism near the pectoral fins produces clicking sounds during courtship and display.

It belongs in a small, densely planted tank with floating plants and calm water; strong flow is not for it. Do not house it with fast or large fish, which will simply out-compete it at feeding time; in a species tank or with other nano fish it truly comes into its own.
