Palythoa forms mats of large, fleshy polyps connected by a shared basal mat. They grow quickly over rock, which makes them one of the easiest corals for beginners.
There is a serious warning attached, though: some palythoa contain palytoxin, one of the most potent natural toxins known. Always wear gloves when cutting or moving them, never work on an affected rock with hot water or steam, and keep it away from eyes and open cuts.
