Care at a glance
The maxima clam has a mantle edge in electric blue, turquoise or golden brown with a velvety pattern, which makes it one of the showpieces of a reef tank. Like corals it lives in symbiosis with algae in its tissue, which produce sugars for it from light.
It therefore needs strong lighting and should be placed high in the tank or on rock, not in the sand; its foot must be able to attach to a hard surface. Keep calcium, alkalinity and magnesium stable at reef levels and watch out for wrasses and puffers, which may pick at its mantle.
