The astraea snail has a conical shell with a star-like rim and is one of the standard algae grazers for a reef tank. It works tirelessly over rock and glass, grazing film algae and early hair algae.
Its weak point: if it falls onto its back in the sand it often cannot right itself and dies. So check the tank now and then and turn fallen snails back over; also make sure there is enough calcium in the water for a healthy shell.
