Care at a glance

The longnose hawkfish is white with a red crosshatch pattern and has a strikingly long, pointed snout. In the wild it sits among the branches of gorgonians and black corals in deeper water, waiting in ambush for passing crustaceans.

Like all hawkfish it has almost no swim bladder: it perches more than it swims, propped on its stout pectoral rays. Small ornamental shrimp are not safe with it; otherwise it is easy to keep, though it is a keen jumper, so cover the tank.

Good to know

  • Preys on shrimp and snails
  • Known jumper — cover the tank
