Care at a glance
The keyhole cichlid from the coastal rivers of the Guianas owes its name to the dark blotch on its flank, which in well-coloured fish takes the shape of a keyhole. It is remarkably peaceful and shy for a cichlid.
When startled or stressed it changes colour within seconds and hides, so give it wood, plants and subdued light to feel secure. It forms a quiet pair that makes little fuss even with fry and fits well in a planted community tank.
