Care at a glance
The julie cichlid from Lake Tanganyika is elongated and yellow with black lengthwise stripes, and moves almost permanently close to the rock. You will see it swimming upside down under an overhang just as readily as the right way up.
It forms a lasting pair that claims a rock crevice as its territory and defends it fiercely against its own kind. So build a solid rock wall with plenty of cracks and caves, keep the water hard and alkaline, and house one pair per tank unless you have a lot of space.
