Care at a glance
The honey gourami is the calm, tolerant member of the gourami family: a small labyrinth fish in warm golden yellow that drifts through the middle layer, feeling out everything with its thread-like ventral fins. It is considerably less disease-prone than the dwarf gourami, which often makes it the better choice.
Unlike most gouramis you can keep several males together; disputes stay at the level of posturing. It takes air from the surface, so always leave a gap between the water and the cover glass, and make sure that layer of air is not too cold. Floating plants, gentle flow and small morsels of food keep it happiest.
