Care at a glance

The dwarf gourami is an explosion of colour for the calm community tank: males in bred forms like powder blue and flame are almost unreal in their intensity. As a labyrinth fish it regularly gulps air at the surface, so the surface must be freely accessible and free of cold draughts.

Keep one male per tank, as they quarrel among themselves. It loves a densely planted aquarium with floating plants and little current, where it can potter along the edges in peace. Buy from a trusted source: the species is sadly prone to dwarf gourami disease, and healthy starter fish make all the difference.
