Care at a glance
The giant gourami from South-East Asia is the largest labyrinth fish in the hobby and grows into a fish of many tens of centimetres; in its home region it is also farmed as a food fish. Young fish are pointed and striped, while old ones develop a tall, almost square profile and a bulging forehead.
It becomes remarkably tame and recognises its keeper, which for enthusiasts with a big tank makes it a genuine pet. It eats soft plants and vegetables and, as an air breather, needs an unobstructed layer of air above the water.
