Care at a glance
The fighting conch is a substantial sand-dwelling snail that 'hops' across the bottom in jerks using a claw-shaped operculum, rather than gliding along. Its name is misleading: the fighting refers to duels between males, not to aggression towards tank residents.
It ploughs tirelessly through the sand and thereby keeps the top layer clean and loose, which counteracts the build-up of detritus in the bed. It does need a decent sand bed with enough growth in it; in a small or over-clean tank there is simply too little for it to find.
