Care at a glance

The cerith snail has a long, tapering shell and is one of the most versatile clean-up crew members for a marine tank. By day it buries itself in the sand, which keeps the bed loose and healthy; at night it comes out to clear algae, detritus and leftover food.

It also reaches places other snails leave alone, such as the floor beneath rocks and the sand grains themselves. Keep a small group in the tank and make sure there is enough calcium in the water; beyond that it is virtually maintenance-free.

Good to know

  • Digger — needs fine sand
  • Active at night
