Care at a glance

The bamboo shrimp from South-East Asia has no claws but four fan-shaped feeding appendages, which it opens to sieve particles from the passing current. If it sits on a stone in the flow for hours with its fans up, that is exactly the behaviour you want to see.

So it needs current and suspended food: in a spotless, ultra-clean tank it slowly starves. Supplement with very fine powdered food released into the flow, give it a fixed perch in front of the filter outlet, and leave it alone when it moults.

Good to know

  • Filter feeder — needs fine suspended food
  • Needs a mature, stable tank
