Care at a glance
The spotted blue-eye is one of the smallest rainbowfish: a golden three-centimetre fish with black-speckled fins and the family's striking blue eye ring. Males spread their fins like fans and display to each other all day, which makes a small tank surprisingly lively.
It shines in a densely planted nano or aquascape tank with soft to medium-hard water and no large tankmates; shrimp and pygmy corys are good company. Keep a group of eight or more with more females than males. It eats small food such as brine shrimp, cyclops and finely crushed flakes, and jumps when startled, so a cover is wise.
