Care at a glance
The rubber lip pleco comes from the cooler, fast-flowing streams of the Andean foothills in Colombia and is grey-brown with a broad, strikingly lipped sucker mouth. It stays modest in size, which makes it one of the few plecos that also fits a medium-sized tank.
It is an excellent algae eater, including tougher films on rocks and glass. Give it oxygen-rich water with flow, smooth stones and some vegetable food; water that is too warm and too still does not suit it.
