Care at a glance
Pogostemon erectus is a fine, bolt-upright stem plant with needle-shaped, light green leaves set closely around the stem, so a group looks like a cluster of small spruce trees. It stays nicely compact, which makes it popular as a midground plant in aquascapes.
It asks for plenty of light and does noticeably better with CO2 and good fertilisation; with too little light the lower leaves drop and it goes bare at the base. Plant the stems in groups of five to ten, top them as they approach the surface and replant the tops. Spread through the tank it looks loose, planted closely it gives a solid accent.
