Care at a glance

Hengel's rasbora looks a lot like the familiar harlequin rasbora but stays smaller and slimmer, with a bright orange stripe above the black wedge that glows under subdued light. It is often mistaken for a small or young harlequin and sold under that name.

It is a schooling fish that only relaxes in a group of eight or more, in soft, slightly acidic water with plenty of fine plants and a dark substrate. Combine it with small, calm fish such as pygmy corys, shrimp or ember tetras; next to busy or large fish it stays pale and shy.
