Care at a glance

The vermetid snail looks nothing like a snail: it builds a twisted calcareous tube on the rock and stays inside it for life. To feed, it casts a net of sticky mucus threads, which it then hauls back in complete with whatever it caught.

Those mucus nets are exactly what irritates corals that keep getting caught in them, so they stop opening and recede at that spot. If they multiply strongly, that is often a sign of too much suspended food; remove the tubes with pliers or seal them with a drop of coral glue.
