Care at a glance
The kribensis is a small West African dwarf cichlid from the Niger delta and one of the easiest cichlids to start with. Unusually, the female is the showier sex: in courtship her belly glows deep purple to cherry red.
Give it a cave made from an upturned pot or a coconut shell, as it is a cave brooder that forms a lasting pair. Outside breeding it fits a community tank well; with eggs or fry, however, the pair defends its corner fiercely, so plan for a calm bottom zone around it.
